ORBITALS: THE END GAME FOR NFTS ON BITCOIN
Until now, most NFTs were tokens pointing to content hosted off-chain. While there are many possibilities for Orbitals, for now Open Orbit will focus on two types: an Orbital is either data on Bitcoin that the chain itself can redraw forever, or an Orbital can point to content inscribed on Bitcoin.
The image is data, not a file.
A data-rendered Orbital's artwork is a few kilobytes of data recorded on Bitcoin. What you see is an SVG drawn fresh from that data every time it is viewed — everything lives on the Bitcoin blockchain, so nothing can go missing.

The collection contract carries its own renderer. When a wallet or marketplace displays a piece, it calls the contract's view function, which builds the SVG from the piece's traits on demand. There is no image server to break, move, or take down — the artwork is a computation the chain can always repeat. Welcome to the age of digital permanence.
Ordinals and Orbitals.
Ordinals made content permanent on Bitcoin: files inscribed on sats, immutable and brilliant. Orbitals are the next step: non-fungible tokens that live on Bitcoin, with real standardized metadata and logic. An Ordinal is a permanent file. An Orbital is a living token that can make Ordinals programmable.

An inscription binds content to a satoshi and tracks it by ordinal theory — ideal for permanence & immutability. An Orbital is an asset issued by a contract on the Alkanes protocol: its metadata is queryable contract state in a standard shape rather than a naming convention, and its rules — supply, phases, entitlements — are enforced by code anyone can verify against the chain. And the two compose: an Orbital's contract can reference inscribed Ordinals content as permanent building material. Welcome to the age of programmable Ordinals.
Alkanes & Protorunes
Protorunes extend the Runes protocol with programmable functionality. Each Alkane is a special type of Protorune that contains executable WASM code. Alkanes contracts are smart contracts that run on Bitcoin, enabling programmable functionality similar to what Ethereum smart contracts provide. They allow developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) directly on Bitcoin's L1 blockchain, without requiring additional layers or sidechains.
GO DEEPER
Contracts are written in Rust, compiled to WebAssembly, and execute against Bitcoin transactions; mints, transfers, and view calls all ride the chain, and anyone running an indexer re-derives the complete state independently. Contracts interact directly with Bitcoin transactions and UTXOs and can interact with each other, as Bitcoin native as possible. The wider stack — including — extends what these contracts can hold and do, all settling on Bitcoin.

Mint phases, wallet limits, and earned entitlements — like the Aries collection's Honorary round — are contract rules collectors can verify on-chain, not promises on a website.
Real, standardized metadata
Traits and provenance live as queryable state in a standard shape. Wallets, marketplaces, and tools all read the same truth from the chain. Our goal is to set the highest standard that makes it simple for all marketplaces to integrate Orbitals.
Composable with Ordinals
Orbitals can use inscribed Ordinals content as permanent building blocks — programmable tokens assembled from immutable material, all on Bitcoin.
THE ULTIMATE GOAL
We ultimately want Open Orbit to become a DAO that is owned by the community, where art collections submitted for review are chosen by trustless voting. For now Aries Labs handles the curation. HOLDER RULES
minimum donation 3,000 sats · 3 per wallet · one Orbital per transaction
The minimum donation is 3,000 sats. It is the amount you send to Aries Labs' receiving address (the "Receiving Address") in the same transaction that creates your piece. It is payment for a digital collectible to a for-profit company. It is not a charitable contribution, is not tax-deductible, and is not refundable — including when the contract refuses your mint. Amounts above the minimum are voluntary, purchase nothing additional, and count only toward leaderboard standing (Section 6).
A mint can be refused after you pay. The contract decides each mint when your transaction confirms. If your address already holds three pieces, the round has minted out, the donation is below the minimum, or the transaction is malformed, no piece is created and the sats you sent remain with the Receiving Address. The Site's pre-flight checks are a convenience that reduces this risk; they are not a guarantee, and a transaction that reaches the network in another way is judged by the contract alone.
If you know Runes: an Orbital has no default transfer — unlike a rune, it does not survive a plain spend.
A piece moves only inside a protocol-aware transaction. Spending the output that holds a piece in an ordinary transaction — a generic "send", a sweep, a consolidation, a fee-bump that consumes it — destroys the piece. Use software that understands Alkanes, and never use a generic send on a piece-bearing output. We cannot recover a destroyed piece and are not responsible for pieces destroyed by wallet operations.

How the mint works
Mint from a 3,000-sat minimum donation on Bitcoin — a nod to the supply — one piece per transaction, up to three per wallet. Donate anything above the minimum: there is no ceiling. Donations up to the Snapshot (block 969566) fed the donation leaderboard, which is now final.
The leaderboard
Every sat sent above the minimum counted toward your address's rank until the Snapshot (block 969566) — on a mint, or as a top-up donation. The standings are final. Ranks and addresses are shown; amounts are not displayed on this site, though all totals are public on the Bitcoin chain. The top 300 addresses at the Snapshot earn the Honorary round.
COUNTING RULE
Standings are computed from the Receiving Address's public transaction history alone — anyone with a public block explorer can recompute them. Each transaction paying the Receiving Address is attributed to the first non-Receiving-Address output of that transaction. Donate from the wallet you minted with. Ranking is by cumulative sats sent to the Receiving Address from any address that holds at least one Aries Orbitals piece at the time standings are computed. Ranks and addresses are shown; amounts are not displayed. Refused mints still count as donations.
AFTER MINTOUT — THE HONORARY ROUND
A separate 333-piece Aries Honorary collection follows, shortly after the public round mints out. The top 300 contributing addresses each design their own 1/1.

The Aries Labs Alkanes MCP is the AI-native front door for building on the Alkanes Protocol and utilizing SUBFROST as a developer. Its beta round is complete — builders shipped against it — and it is now in its private era while this round funds the production infrastructure to run it for everyone. Public access returns after the round. Donations support innovative product development and Alkanes builders — hosted tools, prizes, grants.
